The author of the design for the cathedral was Bernardo Morando, the architect of Zamość, while the benefactor was the city's founder, the Hetman and Crown Chancellor Jan Zamoyski.
The magnificent church in the Lublin Renaissance style was a votive offering for the Hetman's numerous victories, a mausoleum of the Zamoyski family, and the place where oaths of ordynats (heirs to the estate) took place. Today it is used as the cathedral of the Zamość-Lubaczów diocese.
