The Bernardine monks arrived in Leżajsk in 1608 and soon erected their first masonry church. However, the monumental church we can admire today was built between 1618 and 1628.
The early-Baroque sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary is famous for the 16th century miraculous painting of Our Lady of Leżajsk. In the basilica there is a Museum of the Province exhibiting historical collections from monasteries in the eastern territories of Poland lost after the war: paintings, sculptures and other precious objects.
