Oceanika is a complex of large-size aquarium tanks with a total capacity of 250 thousand liters. It houses the richest collection of aquarium fishes in Poland. At the same time, it is the largest private enterprise of this kind in our country.
The aquariums of Oceanika exhibit fishes coming from rivers, lakes, seas and oceans from all over the world. Exhibits are divided according to their place of origin, with a different biotope having been recreated in every tank. The tank with the biotope of Asia has a plentiful amount of fish, including pangas catfishes, silver carps, a giant man-eating catfish (Bagarius yarrelli), Asian arowanas, as well as several species that have already become extinct in the wild. In the aquarium dedicated to fishes from South America, visitors can see very rare catfishes, bonytongues, cichlids or a South American lungfish - a fish with two lungs whose ancestors gave rise to the dominance of four-legged animals on dry land.
At Oceanika, there is also a tank with fishes from Malawi. It displays 50 species of fishes with a variety of dazzling colours and patterns, as well as an aquarium with amazing coral reef fishes, which normally inhabit great coral reefs in saltwater seas. Yet another tank is a home to fishes which live in the waters of continental shelves and visit coral reefs only occasionally. They include honeycomb stingrays, eagle rays and common guitarfish, known for its guitar-shaped body. Other inhabitants of the aquarium include sharks – blacktip sharks and whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) – and several other unusual species, such as red lion fish with venomous dorsal spines (its venom causes extreme pain), moray eels with four jaws or fishes producing coral gravel, so often found on tropical beaches.
There is also a touching area where visitors can feed fish themselves, which is intended as a special attraction for children. The cylinder-shaped tank over the touching area displays shoaling fishes from South America - neon tetras, golden otocincluses and ram cichlids.
